Reining

The equivalent of Compulsory Figures in Ice Skating -  the horse is judged on his responsiveness to the rider on a predetermined pattern. More about Reining. Free-Style Reining is the equivalent of the free skate of long program in Ice Skating.




Western Pleasure

The horse is judged on the walk, trot and lope. The horse should look like she is a pleasure to ride. More about Western Pleasure.




Western Equitation

The rider is judged on the walk, trot and lope. Looks the same as Western Pleasure.




Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Shooting balloons while galloping a pattern. Points are given for balloons popped and time elapsed. More about Cowboy Mounted Shooting.




Ranch Sorting

Two riders sort ten numbered cows from one pen to another. The cows must move into the second pen in numerical order. More about Ranch Sorting and Team Penning.




Team Penning

Three riders sort three marked cows from a herd of 30. The cows must enter a small pen within the allotted time. More about Team Penning and Ranch Sorting.




cutting

The horse is judged on his ability to keep a cow from returning to the herd. The score is based on how well the horse works two cows for 90 seconds. More about Cutting.




Trail Class

The rider guides a horse through a pattern with obstacles which might be found outdoors. More about Trail Class.




Barrel Racing

The fastest time around a cloverleaf pattern without knocking over a barrel.




Pole Bending

Rider and horse travel between poles - gallop to the end of the pattern, weave up, weave back and gallop to the start of the pattern.




Pole weaving

Fastest time down and back through the poles.




Goat tying

Rider dismounts, catches the goat and ties three feet together.




Bulldogging

The rider drops from his horse to the back of the steer and wrestles it to the ground.




Team roping

One rider catches the steer's horns and the other rider catches the steer's back leg.




calf roping

Rope the calf, dismount and tie three of the calf's legs.




Bronc Riding

For 8 seconds - stay on a horse bred to buck while looking good. The riders spurs must touch the horses shoulders for each buck. The horse must learn to cover ground with high bucks.




Western Dressage

Teaching the horse predefined skills used in Western riding. Points are given for how well the horse performs each skill.




Extreme Cowboy Race

Timed event to complete obstacles you might find on a ranch. Includes obstacles that you aren't allowed to do in trail class. More about the Extreme Cowboy Race.
