Hunt Seat Equitation

The rider is being judged at the walk, trot and canter. Read more about Hunt Seat Equitation.

Dressage is a test of all training done on the flat (no jumping). Dressage teaches the skills necessary to compete in any English class. Read more about dressage.

This video is Freestyle - I tried to find a good example of the test but who wants to sit through 15 minutes of talking?

Show jumping

In showjumping, the horse and rider jump a course in an arena. The one with the fewest faults ( like knocking down jumps, refusing to jump, going past jumps) wins. Read more about Show Jumping.

Cross Country

A jumping competition held outdoors over natural-looking obstacles. The lowest score wins, so the winner is the one who completes the course with the fewest faults ( refusals, circling in front of an obstacle, speeding, going too slow). Read more about Cross Country.

Two teams of four riders try to make goals. Read more about Polo.

Hunt Seat Trail

Hunt Seat Trail is like Trail Class but the horses are ridden English.
Gaits are walk, trot, back, and canter.

Saddle seat

A class to showcase gaited breeds. More about Saddleseat.

Fox Hunting

Hounds follow the scent of a fox while riders follow on horseback, jumping obstacles. The main idea is to ride around the countryside and have fun on your horse. More about Fox Hunting.

Games on horseback such as egg and spoon, drop the potato in the bucket and spearing rings. More about Gymkhana.

Handy hunter

Handy Hunter is a combination of Trail Class, Hunt Seat Equitation, and Show Jumping. A course could include gallop jumps, gates and dismounting.

Hunter Under Saddle

The class is judged on the horses' way of going. Shown at the walk, trot and canter in both directions. The horse must also complete a jump course at some point in the competition.

Hunter Pace

A team of two or three riders follow an outdoor course. The team that rides a time closest to the course designer's ideal time is the winner.

Hunter Hack

The horse is shown at a walk, trot, canter and hand gallop, and then he jumps two low fences.

Horses are ridden over courses including natural obstacles. Rides maybe up to 100 miles in a twenty-four hour period.
